In honor of this past weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans race, we decided to make Brett Turnage’s 2014 Audi R18 “Black Beauty” this week’s Reader’s Ride. Brett 3D-printed both the chassis and the body using a program called Fusion360. The chassis features a long 320mm wheelbase for stability and to fit the scale look he was going for. Like the real Black Beauty — the test car that Audi built for the new LMP1 regs for 2014 — Brett’s R18 is all-wheel drive. But unlike the full scale which only uses “e-tron” electric motors on the front axle (the rear is powered by a turbodiesel V6) Brett’s uses a Turnigy 80A controller and a 13.5T motor to power all four wheels via belt drive and two adjustable diffs. The detail on the body is impressive — the R18 has maze of scoops, vents, dive planes and airfoils — and Brett has captured most of them. He even incorporates the backlit number boards.
